Public talk on lake water quality: 'Green bottoms –investigating why clean lakes around the world are experiencing filamentous green algae blooms.'Thursday March 11th
Across the world, scientists are noticing a recent emergence of thick proliferations of filamentous green algae around lake shorelines. Unusually, these are occurring in clean, clear deep-water lakes such as Lakes Baikal (Siberia) and Tahoe (USA). Despite housing most aquatic biodiversity and being where people tend to interact with lakes, the ecology of nearshore areas in lakes is understudied. Recently, an international team of scientists came together to understand what drives these filamentous algae blooms in lakes. This talk will describe this research and present some early findings where we tested hypotheses on growth control of filamentous green algae and investigated monitoring techniques in Lake Taupō
