Taupo District Council media releases: toxic algae warning & wastewater overflow to Waikato River
Toxic algae warning
Nostoc is a type of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae). In certain conditions this algae can produce toxins that are particularly dangerous to dogs.
Low lake levels have increased the likelihood of dogs coming into contact with this algae and owners should discourage their animals from swimming in areas where algae is present, particularly where it is visible on the surface of the water.
The algae is typically only toxic when eaten by canines. Its toxins can be fatal and symptoms often consist of muscle tremors, coma, and watery or bloody diarrhoea. Dogs may also have difficulty breathing or convulsions. Any owner noticing such symptoms should contact a vet as soon as possible.
Wastewater overflow on Ferry Rd/Redoubt St - updated 7th June
Results from daily sampling have shown the river water quality is within safe levels. We are now removing signage in the area. We will be continuing to work closely with DIA to ensure any necessary improvements to the harbourmaster's pump station are undertaken to reduce the risk of this happening again.
