November 2021/December 2021 including LWAG Agenda January 27

General Business: LWAG ended the year with a long-awaited presentation by Landcare Research Manaaki Whenua Scientist, Malcolm McLeod. Malcolm has had a long association with the Taupo catchment, overseeing trials on N-leaching under lucerne cut and carry and more recently under grazed lucerne.

2022 will begin with an update on Contact Energy’s Resource Consent Process and mitigation options by Environmental Advisor Todd Baldwin on January 27. On February 17th LWAG are to host climate scientist James Renwick who will present on ‘Climate Change & NZ’s Energy options’.

Statutory Processes: The Nukuhau Private Plan Change seeking to change the zoning of 77.78 hectares of Rural Environment zoned land to a mix of General Residential and Medium Density Residential has been heard by commissioners. LWAG submitted on this and are yet to hear the decision.

We have also expressed interest in the Lochviews Estate subdivision in Acacia Bay which is lodged but answering TDC & WRC planning questions including on their wastewater treatment proposal.

The Government 3 Waters Reform Policy is progressing with the Government continuing to work with iwi/Māori and local government. They have agreed to develop a draft Water Services Entities Bill to give effect to the Working Group on Representation, Governance and Accountability for consideration as part of its work. The Bill is expected to go to Select Committee next year, and people can make submissions on the Bill at that time.

Farming Issues: There are national processes underway on agricultural emissions including the He Waka Eke Noa Discussion Document Steering Group Discussion Document to support Partnership Targeted Engagement Nov/Dec 2021 to inform a much broader engagement in February 2022, where farmers and growers will be able to review the current progress on developing a system to price agricultural greenhouse gases and give their feedback on the options.

General Business: LWAG are please to be hosting Manaaki Whenua/Landcare Research scientist Malcolm McLeod at our November 18 meeting (Agenda link below) Malcolm will present on N-leaching under grazed lucerne trials and update us on further research in the Taupo catchment. All welcome - Acapulco Motel conference room, 5.15 pm Thursday 18th November.

We have confirmed Dr James Renwick for February 17th 2022. Dr Renwick will be presenting on Climate Science and Global Warming issues. Further information to follow.

Statutory Processes: Nukuhau Private Plan Change hearings were held via zoom with commissioners interested in our opposition to gully modification, & multiple benefits of recreation/stormwater/biodiversity uses and potential management guidelines. Proposed development already agreed to be provisional on wastewater removal to Taupo. Deliberations underway.

Contact Energy’s Todd Baldwin will present on studies relating to the forthcoming Resource Consent application at LWAG’s January 27 meeting (n.b. 4th Thursday of the month for January only)

General Business: LWAG to host TDC's Denis Lewis - annual '3 Waters' report September 16, at the Acapulco Motel Conference Rm, 19 Rifle Range Rd under level 2+ conditions. August 2021 meeting to be rescheduled to later in the year due to Covid lockdown level 4

LWAG are sorry to have cancelled our August meeting where we were due to have TDC’s 3 Waters team give their annual update. On September 16, LWAG host Malcolm McLeod who will report on the Manaki Whenua/Landcare Research trials on Grazing Under Lucerne and outline the current trials on the former Barton farm looking at Diverse Pasture.

General Business: Mike Barton from Taupo Beef graciously agreed to fill a gap in our speaker schedule at short notice at our July meeting. He updated LWAG members on the latest achievements and activities of Taupo Beef who enable landowners in the catchment to leverage off the Lake Taupo Protection Project via their brand and their unique story. Taupo Beef continue to win awards for their business and their products and export to Japan as well as supply NZ supermarkets, restaurants and ready meal brands. General Business: Lakes and Waterways Action Group are hosting Alison Dewes at our June meeting and AGM 5.15 pm on Thursday June 17 upstairs at the Taupo Library.


Alison, whose masters’ thesis was on economic resilience and environmental performance of dairy farms in the upper Waikato region, will present on ‘A community-led Bay of Plenty Project’ based on improving ecological outcomes for Te Waihi Estuary.  

We are pleased to be able to use the Library fo a venue once again after technical issues with their lift are now resolved.

Statutory Processes: LWAG are also going to hear from Contact Energy about their 'Geofuture' processes in the district.

Of interest is the decision by both TDC and WRC on their Long Term Plans to retain the Lake Taupo Protection Trust for at least a further two years.

General Business: Lakes and Waterways Action Group are hosting Wairakei Estate Conservation Manager Robin Gerding at their May meeting. All are welcome to attend on Thursday May 20th 5.15pm upstairs at the Taupo Library.

Statutory Processes: LWAG gave oral submissions to TDC & WRC’s Long Term Plans with a separate hearing for the Lake Taupo Protection Project consultation.

Science Update: WRC have contracted Dr Piet Verburg from NIWA to undertake a study using the monitoring buoy data from Lake Taupo. This study will focus on evaporation from the lake, and how this changes over the time the buoy has been in place. See minutes via link below for WRC presentation on this and also an update on nearshore water testing.
